ABOUT NORWELL The town of Norwell is a community of 11,000 located in Plymouth County, about 20 miles south of Boston, along the scenic North River. Initially, Norwell was inhabited in 1636 as part of the Scituate, which covers today's Scituate and Norwell. In 1849, a part of Scituate, now known as Norwell, separated from Scituate and was registered as South Scituate. In 1888, the city joined again as Norway in recognition of Henry Norwell, a dry goods trader and a summer resident of the city who provided funds for the maintenance of his public roads. Today, Norwell is a community of the highest middle class. Its high level of public services, amenities and geographical location made it an attractive place to live for professional families. His highly developed school system is one of the reasons that many people move to Norwell. There are a number of recreational areas throughout the Town offering a variety of outdoor activities. These include; Valley Swamp and Stetson Meadows Conservation Land, the Albert F. Norris Reservation, Black Pond Natural Preserve, the North River Salt Marsh, Cuffey Hill Reservation, Miller Woods and the Donovan Property. Its Town Pier accommodates a working fishing fleet and that, coupled with three business areas, represents commercial interests in the town. Scituate also has a strong sense of its history and commemorates its founding in August each year via the celebration of "Heritage Days".
